A Technology-based Grant for Transformative Learning
From my own experience teaching mathematics in high school, students often want to know what the answer to a problem is? Did they get it right? Do it right? And they want to know NOW!!! Many of my own students fail to see math, and geometry in particular, as a journey of rational thought and understanding; they fail to see connections to what they know and the world around them, and perhaps most concerning of all, they fail to see value in mathematics education. Although it is important to get the problems right, there is also a deeper reward for students that understand the “why” of math? Why is it that a2 + b2 = c2? Why does a train traveling west from point A, and a train traveling east from point B cross at exactly C, and not D, E, or F?...you get the idea.
Through this DreamIT proposal, I will change my teaching strategies, but also bring new technology to the content of geometry. By building a classroom environment that promotes scaffolded lessons and a social learning environment, and through the use of innovative TI-Nspire™ technologies, students will build a deeper, more meaningful understanding of geometry and be able to apply their mathematical reasoning and knowledge in new ways. |
